Best of British: Beauty from the 1940s

Updated: May 4, 2020

On the 8th of May we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of VE day which marks the end of the second world war and that got me thinking and reflecting about how women still maintained their beauty treatments and regimes during the war especially once rationing was introduced. Even more so when there are posters like the one below all over magazines and billboards.

So when I started researching this it turns out these women were incredibly resourceful at still wanting to maintain their beauty during the war. Here are some of the fantastic alternative beauty products that were used. However, please don't try most of these at home as they really are not good for you.

1) Lip tint made from beetroot juice

2) Mascara made from shoe polish - Please don't do this!

3) Face powder made from chalk - Please don't do this!

4) Vegetable juices used as hair dyes:

-swede for blondes

-carrots for red heads

- beetroot or potatoes for brunettes

5) Soapy pumice stone instead of a razor

6) Tea bags were used to stain the legs and then a black line drawn up the back to give the illusion of stockings.

Which of the suitable ones would you try, id definitely give the lip tint one a go.

Why not have a bit of fun this VE day and give yourself a vintage makeup look with the makeup products available today (thankfully). So here are my top tips for creating that vintage glam look:

1) Eyebrows- natural arch and shaping with a hint of dark brown eyebrow pencil.

2) Eyes - light eye shadow to match your eye colour so think light pinks and browns. For even more added glam and a touch of gold or silver.

3) Cheeks - light rouge on the apples of the cheeks and brushed upwards to the cheek bone.

4) Lip - matte red colour and use a lip liner over to draw above the natural lip line to create a full lip look.

I hope you enjoyed this little trip down memory lane and if you do decide to give the vintage look a go please send them to me

Coming up next lets talk skincare and getting the right routine for you and your skin.

As always stay safe and sending love to you all

Harriet xx
